Workshops: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

Americans for Immigrant Justice (AIJ) is partnering with Miami Dade College (MDC) to host workshops designed to assist students and others in the MDC community in applying for Deferred Action Status and Employment Authorization. If you want to learn more about President Obama’s Deferred Action program, you should attend one of the Application Workshops being held at MDC campuses. On June 15, President Obama announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be granting a temporary form of immigration protection called “deferred action” to individuals who meet certain requirements. Under the President’s announcement, individuals who meet the following criteria may be eligible:

  • Have proof of entering the United States under the age of sixteen;
  • Have proof that they have continuously resided in the United States since at least June 15, 2007 and were present in the U.S. as of June 15, 2012;
  • Have proof that they are currently in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a GED or have been honorably discharged from the military;
  • Have not been convicted of certain criminal offenses;
  • Were thirty years of age or younger as of June 15, 2012.

Should I apply for this program if I qualify? This is a decision that you will have to make but we urge you to attend one of the Application Workshops at Miami Dade College to better understand your options.

Is there anything I can do now if I think I qualify? You can start collecting documentation you already have showing that you meet the requirements and that you were present in the U.S. as of 6/15/12; you should attend one of the Application Workshops at Miami Dade College.
