All people and families who seek safety in the United States deserve a fair opportunity to make their case for asylum and other protections. That’s why, when the Biden administration introduced the Family Expedited Removal Management Program (FERM) in May 2023, we quickly mobilized to provide comprehensive legal services to families enrolled in FERM. Nearly a year later, we continue the work to protect their individual rights, monitor this new policy, and push for rights-based and family-centered improvements to the process.

Today, we joined community members, elected officials, immigrants’ rights organizations, and faith leaders to call for the U.S. government to immediately cease deportations to Haiti. We are heartbroken by the news that the Biden administration sent another deportation flight to Haiti last week, because we know that the life and wellbeing of each person forcibly returned is at risk. Haitians fleeing extreme violence, political turmoil, and a humanitarian crisis must be given an opportunity to seek protection in the United States, not forcibly returned to near certain harm.

🌎 Environmental disasters displace millions of people each year and disproportionately harm Indigenous people and communities.
🌎 Extreme heat creates unsafe–and even fatal–work environments for agricultural workers. Nearly 3/4 of farmworkers in the US are immigrants.
🌎 People in immigration detention are often subjected to inhumane environmental conditions, including toxic chemical exposure and other injustices.
🌎 Climate change exacerbates economic insecurity and inequality for already vulnerable populations.

Among those deported was Gerson Joseph, a Florida

Among those deported was Gerson Joseph, a Florida resident for more than 20 years who is engaged to be married and has a daughter who is a U.S. citizen. Joseph, who turns 40 next week, called his lawyer, Philip Issa, on Wednesday informing him that an officer at the Krome Detention Center in southwest Miami-Dade, where he had been detained since November, informed him he would be deported in the morning.

“I want to say that I’m shocked but I’m not. I’m upset more than anything,” said Issa, an attorney with Americans for Immigrant Justice in Miami.

“Based on what I was reading about Haiti, I couldn’t imagine they could pull this flight off. I didn’t believe it until it actually happened. This administration has not given us any reason to think that it is dealing compassionately with immigrants and so I am upset. I’m disappointed because they are sending him back to a war zone. It’s catastrophic.”

Today, along with 73 other people, our client was deported to Haiti.

He lived in the U.S. for 20 years and has a 7-year-old U.S. citizen daughter. It is heartless to tear apart families & communities to deport our neighbors to the current conditions in Haiti.

Given that the Biden Administration is well aware of the unsafe and dire conditions throughout the country, resuming deportation flights to Haiti is unconscionable and shameful. What will it take for our government to begin valuing Haitian lives?
